The Compromised Barrier

Skin that has been made sensitive, not born that way.

Why do my usual products suddenly sting?

When the barrier is losing water and letting irritants in, products that used to be fine start to sting. The usual answer is fewer products for about four weeks, so skin has time to feel comfortable again.

What usually helps
  • A low foam cleanser that doesn't leave skin tight
  • Ceramides with cholesterol, on damp skin
  • The same three products, morning and night, for four weeks
What to pause
  • Every exfoliant: acids, scrubs, brushes, pads
  • Fragrance, essential oils and plant extracts, centella included
  • Hot water on the face
Ingredients to look for
  • Ceramides NP, AP, EOP
  • Tranexamic acid
  • Panthenol and beta glucan
When skincare is not enough

If stinging, redness or flaking keeps getting worse after four weeks of a simple routine, or you see swelling or broken skin, please see a doctor or dermatologist.
