The Perioral Pattern

Small bumps around the mouth that behave differently from acne.

Why do I get small bumps around my mouth?

These bumps often follow heavy creams, steroid creams or some toothpastes, and acne products tend to make them worse. The first step is taking things away, not adding them.

What usually helps
  • One simple, fragrance free cleanser
  • A light moisturiser only where needed
  • A fluoride free, SLS free toothpaste
What to pause
  • Steroid cream on the face. Talk to your doctor before stopping, not suddenly
  • Heavy creams around the mouth
  • Acne spot treatments on this area
Ingredients to look for
  • Tranexamic acid
  • Azelaic acid
  • Panthenol
When skincare is not enough

If the bumps have not settled within about four weeks of simplifying, or if you have been using a steroid cream on your face, please see a doctor or dermatologist.
