How Should You Prepare Your Skin Before a Chemical Peel?

17 octobre 2026

Quick answer: Preparing for a chemical peel means arriving with calm, intact, sun-protected skin and an honest medical history, usually over two to four weeks. It does not mean exfoliating harder in advance. Any priming active, such as a prescription retinoid or a pigment inhibitor, should be started and stopped on your provider's schedule, because it changes how deeply the peel acts.

What people usually assume

The common idea is that skin should be "used to" acids before a peel: scrub or use a strong at-home acid in the week before, so the professional peel works better and causes less peeling. A second assumption is that preparation is a product kit, and that the more steps it has, the safer the peel will be. A third is that a superficial peel is too mild to need any preparation at all.

What actually happens in the skin

A peel is a controlled chemical injury. The acid dissolves the bonds between corneocytes and, depending on its type, strength and contact time, reaches the upper epidermis, the whole epidermis or the dermis. The skin then heals from the follicles and the edges of the wound, and the result depends on how evenly the acid penetrated and how cleanly the skin repaired. Anything that makes penetration uneven or the repair slower makes the outcome less predictable.

Preparation changes penetration, and that cuts both ways. In a double-blind trial in 16 men with sun-damaged skin, two weeks of 0.1% tretinoin on one half of the face before a 35% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel made the frosting appear earlier and more evenly on the treated side in 94% of them. After seven days, 75% of the tretinoin-treated half-faces had fully healed, against 31% of the placebo halves, though by two weeks and three months the cosmetic results looked the same (Hevia 1991). The retinoid helped healing, and it also made the same acid act faster. That is exactly why an unplanned retinoid or acid in the days before a peel matters: your skin may take the peel deeper than the provider intended.

A disrupted barrier does something similar, in two directions at once. Skin that is already tight, stinging or flaking holds water poorly, so it heals less smoothly, and it lets the acid and any irritant in faster and more patchily, onto tissue that is already inflamed. The same peel then irritates more and performs worse. This is why practice guidelines list facial dermatitis and active bacterial, viral or fungal infection as contraindications, alongside a tendency to keloids and photosensitizing medications, and recommend two to four weeks of priming that starts with sunscreen (Khunger 2008).

Superficial peels are not risk-free either. In a five-year review of 473 superficial peels in people with skin types III to VI, 3.8% led to a complication, most often crusting (2.3%), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (1.9%) and redness (1.9%). All resolved, but some took up to eight months, the deepest skin type had about five times the odds of a side effect, and complications were less common in winter (Vemula 2018). Pigment risk is the main reason preparation matters for medium to deep skin tones.

A barrier-first way to prepare

  1. Start with an assessment, four weeks out if you can. Ask which acid, what depth and how many sessions, and tell the provider about isotretinoin or other retinoid tablets now or in the past year, photosensitizing medication, cold sores, keloids or raised scars, recent laser, waxing or other treatments, and any skin condition. A cold-sore history before deeper peels is a question for a physician, who may prescribe preventive antiviral medication.
  2. Calm the skin first. For the next two to four weeks use a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturizer and nothing that stings. If the skin is reactive now, the peel waits; how often sensitive skin should exfoliate explains why less is more at this stage.
  3. Wear daily sunscreen the skin tolerates from the start of preparation, including cloudy days, and avoid tanning or a sunburn before the appointment.
  4. Use priming actives only as directed. Prescription retinoids and pigment inhibitors such as hydroquinone are sometimes used before peels, particularly for pigment-prone skin; start them only when your provider or physician says so, at the frequency they set, and lower the frequency rather than push through if they sting.
  5. Stop at-home exfoliants and retinoids on the date your provider gives you. No scrubs, cleansing brushes, dermaplaning, waxing, threading or depilatory creams on the area in the days before.
  6. Plan the recovery window. Book the peel when you can avoid strong sun, heat, heavy sweating and outdoor sport for the following days, so a February ski trip should come before the peel, not after. After a peel, sunscreen goes on the same day unless your provider instructs otherwise.

Expert panels agree that consistent cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection around procedures is sensible, but they also note that very few studies have compared a specific routine with no skin care at all (Nikolis 2026). Preparation is about removing avoidable risk, not about buying more products. Once the peel is done, why skin is more sensitive after a chemical peel and how long to avoid acids after a facial treatment cover the next phase.

Reasons to postpone, and signs that need care

Postpone the peel if you have an active cold sore, broken or sunburnt skin, a new rash or flare, an infected spot, or have just started a new medication. After a peel, contact the provider and see a physician for blisters, pain or swelling that increases after the first day, pus or yellow crusting, a fever, or darkening that persists beyond the expected peeling period. Any medication change, antiviral prophylaxis and the treatment of pigment complications belong to a physician, dermatologist or pharmacist.

How firm the peel-prep evidence is

Thinner than most prep kits suggest. The tretinoin trial was small, all male, older and sun-damaged, and used a medium-depth TCA peel; it does not show what priming does before a light glycolic or lactic peel. Recommendations for hydroquinone and tretinoin priming come largely from expert guidelines and clinical experience rather than head-to-head trials. The complication figures come from one centre and may not match other settings or peel types, and the expert panel on periprocedural skin care included authors employed by a skincare manufacturer. What the sources agree on is the direction: calm skin, sun protection and a planned recovery reduce avoidable problems. Use this as background only; it is not a diagnosis and not a substitute for the judgment of your physician or dermatologist.

What Is the Skin Microbiome, and Can Products Disrupt It?

The skin microbiome is the community of microbes on your skin. Ordinary moisturizers barely move it; harsh or alkaline cleansing, antiseptics, antibiotics and inflammation do.

Yes. Surfactants left on the lid, rubbing, fragrance and preservatives, and products drifting into the tear film all irritate. Soak, do not scrub, rinse, and keep the formula simple.
