What Do Thickeners, Film Formers and Powders Do in Skincare?

4 novembre 2026

Quick answer: Thickeners, film formers and powders are the texture ingredients in a formula. They do not target anything in the skin. Instead they control how a product flows out of the bottle, how it spreads, how quickly it sets, what layer it leaves behind and how matte or dewy the skin looks afterward. That makes them the reason two serums with the same actives can feel completely different, and the most common cause of pilling, stickiness or a tight, powdery finish.

Why does texture matter if it is not an active ingredient?

Because texture decides how a product is used. A gel that runs off the fingers gets applied unevenly. A cream that drags gets rubbed harder. A serum that feels sticky gets skipped. Researchers who compared eight creams made with different thickeners found that firmness, stickiness and how hard a cream was to spread all rose with the amount of thickener, and that lab measurements of spreadability matched what a trained panel felt on the skin (Estanqueiro 2016). In other words, feel is measurable, and it changes behavior.

It is also why reading an ingredient list is only half the story. The same actives in a different base can behave differently on the same skin, a point we cover in why two products with the same ingredients can feel different.

What is a thickener actually doing?

A thickener changes how the watery part of a product resists movement. Most skincare thickeners are shear thinning: they are thick when still and thin out when rubbed. That is why a gel can sit on a fingertip and still glide across the cheek.

Some thickeners also give a product a yield stress, a small threshold of force it needs before it moves at all. Products with a yield stress hold their shape, keep beads or powders suspended and do not drip. In a study of thickened hand gels, swollen polymer particles (microgels) gave this kind of hold and limited runoff, while a long-chain gum relied on simply being thick and showed signs of stickiness (Silva 2022).

The thickeners you will meet most often fall into three families:

  • Natural gums such as xanthan gum, made by fermentation. Very effective at tiny amounts, they hold and suspend well but can feel slightly tacky at higher levels.
  • Cellulose derivatives such as hydroxyethylcellulose, made from plant cellulose. They make clear, clean gels and are not disturbed by acids or salts, but they flow rather than hold.
  • Synthetic polymers such as polyacrylate crosspolymer-6. They form a fresh, quick-breaking gel that holds its shape and can keep a light cream stable with little conventional emulsifier.

An independent safety panel that reviewed 34 microbial gums, including xanthan gum, concluded they are safe as used in cosmetics, where they work as thickeners, stabilizers and film formers (Fiume 2016).

Why does my serum suddenly feel watery, or my cream separate?

Texture can fail, and the failure usually has a physical cause:

  • Salts and acids. Some thickeners depend on electrical charge. Ingredients that add salts, or lower the pH, can make them lose their grip, so a formula can thin when certain actives are added. This is a formulation issue, not something you can fix at home.
  • Contamination. Cellulose-based gels can be broken down by enzymes from microbes. A gel that has turned noticeably runnier than when you opened it should be replaced, even if it looks and smells fine.
  • Heat and age. Separation, beads of water on the surface or oil rising to the top mean the structure has weakened. Store products as the label directs.

What is a film former, and why does it cause pilling?

A film former leaves a thin, continuous layer on the skin once the water evaporates. Hydrolyzed silk proteins, plant gums and many polymers do this. The film can make skin feel smoother and softer and can hold moisture near the surface for a while. It is a surface effect that lasts until the product is washed off.

Silk protein ingredients have been reviewed by an independent safety panel, which found most of them safe as used in cosmetics, where they mainly condition skin and hair (Johnson 2020). Studies you may see quoted about silk usually tested a combination. In one 8-week split-face trial in 40 women aged 40 to 70, a complex containing silk sericin, niacinamide and a third ingredient improved hydration, barrier measurements and surface smoothness compared with the base cream alone (Berardesca 2015). That result belongs to that complex, not to every product with silk on the label.

Pilling, those little rolls that appear when you apply the next layer, usually happens when two film-forming layers meet before the first has set, or when you use more product than the skin can take up. Try these steps before blaming the formula:

  1. Use less. A thin layer sets faster and pills less.
  2. Wait a minute between layers, especially before sunscreen or makeup.
  3. Press rather than rub the next layer on.
  4. If two products always pill together, they may simply be incompatible textures. Use them at different times of day.

How do clay and starch powders change how skin looks?

Powders such as kaolin clay and corn or arrowroot starch absorb oil and moisture and scatter light, which makes skin look less shiny and softer in focus. Kaolin is one of the gentlest clays because its layers do not swell in water; it absorbs on the outside of its tiny platelets rather than soaking up water like more aggressive clays. An independent safety panel recently concluded that kaolin is safe as used in cosmetics (Burnett 2026).

Two practical points matter more than the ingredient itself:

  • Do not let a clay mask crack. As a mask dries completely it keeps pulling oil from the surface, including the oils your skin needs. If your skin feels tight or looks red afterwards, rinse while the mask is still slightly damp. Our guide on clay masks for oily, sensitive skin goes further.
  • Matte is not the same as balanced. Powders take away shine for a few hours; they do not change how much oil your skin makes. For longer-term shine, see how to control oil without drying out your skin.

A common worry is that cornstarch feeds yeast on the skin. In a study where yeast was applied to the skin of volunteers, neither cornstarch nor talc increased its growth; moisture was the deciding factor, and both powders reduced friction injury (Leyden 1984). The more realistic concern with starch is keeping it clean and dry, because starch is a natural food for microbes in a damp container.

How can I tell which texture ingredients a product uses?

  • Look near the end of the list for gums (xanthan gum), cellulose (hydroxyethylcellulose) and polymers with names ending in crosspolymer or copolymer. They work at well under 1%.
  • Clays and starches can appear near the top of a mask or powder and lower in a cream.
  • If a thickener appears above the actives you are paying for, the active is likely present at a low level.

What the evidence can and cannot tell you

  • Ingredient evidence: independent safety reviews support xanthan gum and other microbial gums, silk protein ingredients, kaolin and corn-derived ingredients as safe in the way they are used in cosmetics. Studies on how these ingredients behave are mostly laboratory and texture studies, not studies of skin changes.
  • Formulation rationale: choosing a thickener, film former or powder is about feel, stability and how evenly a product applies. That is real, but it is a reason a product is pleasant to use, not proof that it works better.
  • Finished-product evidence: a trial of one complex (such as the silk sericin study) tells you about that complex only. Ask whether the product in your hand was itself tested.
  • Professional observation: in practice, most complaints about pilling, stickiness or tightness after a mask are texture problems that change with how much product is used, how long it is left on and what it is layered with.

The water, solvents, pH adjusters and chelators that make up the base of a product decide how much of each ingredient reaches your skin, how it feels and how well the product keeps.

What Do Emollients Do in Skincare?

4 novembre 2026

Emollients make skin feel smoother and softer, some oils slow water loss, and barrier lipids like ceramides and cholesterol are the skin’s own building material. Here is how to tell them apart on a label.
