What Are Probiotics and Postbiotics in Skincare?

October 31, 2026 2026년 10월 31일 31 octobre 2026

Short answer: A probiotic is a live microorganism that benefits its host; a postbiotic is a preparation of inactivated microorganisms or their components that does the same. Most skincare sold as "probiotic" actually contains lysates or ferments, which are postbiotics, because a preserved cream is built to stop microbes from growing. The human evidence on skin is early: a few small trials are promising, mainly in eczema and acne, and reviews disagree on how large the effect is.

What is the difference between a probiotic, a postbiotic and a prebiotic?

The words come from gut research and are now used loosely on labels. A probiotic is live microorganisms that, given in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit. A prebiotic is a substance, often a sugar such as inulin or an oligosaccharide, that selectively feeds helpful microbes already present. A postbiotic was defined by an international expert panel in 2021 as a "preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host" (Salminen 2021). That definition has two parts that matter for skincare: the microbes must be deliberately inactivated, and there must be evidence of a benefit. A filtrate of the liquid the microbes grew in, with no cells or cell parts, does not meet it; neither does a lysate with no supporting data.

On ingredient lists, postbiotics appear as "lactobacillus ferment", "bifida ferment lysate", "lactococcus ferment lysate" and similar names. They contain fragments of bacterial cell walls, proteins, peptides, organic acids and other metabolites. In laboratory work, components like these interact with the receptors that keratinocytes and immune cells use to recognize microbes, which is the proposed route to calming inflammation or supporting barrier repair.

Can live bacteria survive in a jar of skincare?

Rarely, and usually not by design. A water-based cosmetic is normally put through a preservative challenge test, which means it is formulated to kill or suppress microorganisms that get in. A product that kept a living bacterial culture healthy would struggle to keep out contaminants at the same time. Live-culture products do exist, mostly as freeze-dried powders activated just before use or as anhydrous formulas, and some clinical work uses live bacteria under controlled conditions. For the ordinary bottle on a shelf, "probiotic" should be read as "contains bacterial ferment or lysate". That is not a criticism; it is simply what is inside.

The skin also already has a resident community. Cutibacterium acnes lives in everyone's follicles, as explained in why phones and pillowcases do not seed acne, and staphylococci, corynebacteria and Malassezia yeasts live on the surface. A topical product does not install a new microbiome. At most, it shifts the balance or the immune response for as long as it is used.

What has actually been shown on skin?

The clearest science is in atopic dermatitis, where Staphylococcus aureus overgrowth drives inflammation. Researchers isolated a strain of Staphylococcus hominis from healthy human skin that kills S. aureus. In a one-week, double-blind phase 1 trial in 54 adults with eczema colonized by S. aureus, applying the live strain to the forearm was safe, reduced S. aureus and blocked one of its inflammatory toxins, but did not significantly reduce eczema severity across all participants (Nakatsuji 2021). That is a drug under development, not a cosmetic, and it shows how specific a working bacterium has to be.

For acne the picture is mixed. A 2026 systematic review of 33 studies with 2,112 patients, oral and topical combined, reported average total lesion reductions of 45% with probiotics and about 50% with postbiotics, against 37% in control groups, with no serious adverse events (Warp 2026). A meta-analysis of five randomized trials of Lactobacillus products in 332 people, published the same year, found no significant reduction in inflammatory, non-inflammatory or total lesions compared with placebo or benzoyl peroxide (Abedin 2026). Both can be true: the broad review includes weaker study designs, and the strict one has few trials. An earlier systematic review of topical probiotics combined animal and human studies and mainly mapped where research was still needed (Knackstedt 2020).

Should I try one, and how?

A postbiotic serum or moisturizer is reasonable as a supporting step for skin that is dry, easily irritated or prone to mild breakouts, provided the rest of the routine is sound. It should not replace a treatment that works. A barrier-first way to try one:

  1. Settle the routine first. Two to three weeks of a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturizer and daily sunscreen your skin tolerates, so you have a stable baseline.
  2. Pick one product with a short ingredient list and no fragrance or essential oils, so a reaction can be traced.
  3. Patch test it for several days on the side of the jaw; ferments and lysates are complex mixtures, and a reaction cannot be traced to one component. How to patch test on sensitive skin sets out the method.
  4. Use it once a day, in place of a step rather than on top of everything. If it stings, use it every other day before deciding it does not suit you.
  5. Judge it after 8 to 12 weeks with photos in the same daylight, and stop if nothing has changed.

Skip DIY yogurt or kefir masks and "live culture" products mixed at home, which can carry unwanted organisms, and do not apply any microbial product to broken, weeping or infected skin. Do not stop a prescribed eczema or acne treatment to try a probiotic instead. In eczema, crusting, oozing, sudden spreading redness or fever needs a physician, and so does a rash you cannot classify; how to tell eczema from dry skin helps with the first question. People with a weakened immune system should ask their physician before using any live-culture product.

How far ahead of the science is the marketing?

Quite far. Most trials are small and short, use one specific strain or lysate, and are often run by the company that makes it, so a result for one ferment says nothing about another with a similar name. The acne reviews disagree, and the best-designed eczema trial was a one-week safety study of a live strain that is not sold as skincare (Nakatsuji 2021; Warp 2026; Abedin 2026). "Supports the microbiome" on a label is not a measured outcome. What is known supports a modest, supporting role for some postbiotics on a calm barrier, not a cure for any condition. This article is educational and is not a diagnosis or a substitute for care from a physician or dermatologist.

Bring the bottle and ask in person

Ferment and lysate names are hard to compare on a label, and whether one suits you depends on what the rest of your routine is doing to the barrier. Bring the product, or a photo of its ingredient list, to the South Surrey studio and talk it through with Clara before you add it.

What Is the Skin Microbiome, and Can Products Disrupt It?

The skin microbiome is the community of microbes on your skin. Ordinary moisturizers barely move it; harsh or alkaline cleansing, antiseptics, antibiotics and inflammation do.

Yes. Surfactants left on the lid, rubbing, fragrance and preservatives, and products drifting into the tear film all irritate. Soak, do not scrub, rinse, and keep the formula simple.
